Brasov – Gateway to the Mountains The city of Brasov is located about 2 hour’s drive from the capital of Bucharest. It is a major city in its own right with rapidly developing tourism sector. Brasov is probably the most architecturally attractive city in Romania. Its centre contains the best preserved Saxon architecture of any of the major cities and the Black Church attracts many visitors every year. Brasov’s location at the heart of the beautiful Transylvanian Alps (or Carpathian Mountains) is a major factor behind its popularity. During the winter it is the main town from which to access Romania’s ski resorts. The ski resorts of Poiana Brasov, Predeal and Sinaia are all within easy reach of the city. In summer, Brasov has long attracted holiday makers looking to escape from the summer heat in Bucharest and, more recently, it has become a hotspot for walkers and mountain bikers and other outdoor sports. It is also close to Bran Castle, famously known as Dracula’s Castle which is the most visited tourist attraction in Romania. The village of Bran has become one of the most popular spots for wealthy people from Bucharest to have a second home. A growing number of people in Romania are beginning to realise the potential that lies in developing the tourism sector. The mountains of Transylvania are Romania’s most stunning natural landscape and the long term sustainable development of this resource is becoming a priority for policy makers.
