The Geography and Climate of RomaniaRomania occupies an area of approximately 237,000 square kilometers and has a population of around 23 million. It is a geographically diverse country. The Plains The capital Bucharest sits on low lying plains in the south east of the country, which, due to climate soil and water supply, are very productive agricultural lands. The Mountains The dramatic and beautiful Carpathian mountain chain splits the country in half, with Moldoveanu (2544m) the highest peak. The Brasov area is the access point for the central and eastern end of the chain and is very popular for outdoor pursuits, particularly skiing in winter and hiking in summer. The Danube and the Coast The River Danube forms the country’s southern border and forms part of the 3000 kilometre long canal system that links the North and Black Seas, a project completed in 1993. The Danube forms a huge delta where it meets the Black Sea - this area is a haven for wildlife and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The area south of the Delta on the Black Sea coast is home to Romania’s beaches and resort towns, the largest being Constanta.
